Learn how to sail and manoeuver a keelboat as the helm person including tacking, gybing, heaving to, picking up a mooring and coming into the marina under outboard power. Emergency manouvers like sailing with reduced rig, anchoring and recovering a man overboard will be demonstrated and practiced.

You should be familiar with parts of the boat, basic sailing terms and rules. You should know how to tie basic knots like the bowline, figure of eight stopper knot, clove hitch to attach fenders and a round turn and two half hitches.

Review the "Introductory Keelboat" booklet you recieved with 'Start Crewing'. It is necessary for you to have completed the "Start Crewing" course or can demonstrate prior learning and competencies.

 


Course Overview
The first step on the Keelboat pathway introduces you to the basics of sailing on a small keelboat, including boat handling, safety and sailing theory. In the combined course, you will also experience and develop the theory and practical skills to confidently take control on the helm.

Water confident.

Who should do this course?

This course is designed for participants who wish to begin sailing in a keelboat. Learn the basics of crewing and helming, whilst staying relatively dry! All the equipment and gear will be provided by your accredited Discover Sailing Centre.

Course Outcome

You will gain your Start Crewing and Start Helming completion certificate.
