Volunteering

Volunteering with Cairns Yacht Club

Volunteers are the heart and soul of everything we do, it’s our passionate community of members and supporters who keep the club thriving. Whether you have a lot of time to give or just a little, your contribution truly makes a difference.

How You Can Get Involved

We believe everyone has something unique to offer. You don’t have to be a seasoned sailor - if you’ve got enthusiasm, we’ll find the right fit! Some of the areas we’re currently looking for extra hands include:

  • Grant Application Writing - assist in writing grants applications for the club
  • Social Media & Content Creation – photos, videos and sharing club updates
  • Skippers & Keelboats for WAGS – help get more people out on the water

  • BBQ Crew – assisting with cooking the BBQ at social events

  • Event Bar - Serving drinks at the bar for events (RSA required)
  • Sailing Support & Safety Boat Crew – helping out on and off the water

  • Junior Program Support (Tackers) – “eyes on water” and helping sessions run smoothly (Blue Card required)
  • Admin & Clubhouse Support – lending a hand with organisation and day-to-day tasks

  • Marketing - spreading the word about club events & introducing more people to CYC

  • Event Support – setup/pack-down, registrations, results, welcoming visitors

  • Admin & Clubhouse Support – organising, tidying, light office help

  • Grounds & Working Bees – mowing, weeding, gardening and outdoor tidy-ups

  • Cleaning & Housekeeping – clubhouse, kitchen, bathrooms, laundry (tea towels/tablecloths)

  • Boats, Gear & Facilities Maintenance – washing boats, checking gear, fuel/gas, basic upkeep

If you’d like to volunteer, send us an email with your details and areas of interest, to: admin@cairnsyachtclub.com.au

Why Volunteer at CYC

  • Be part of something bigger – help shape the future of a 116-year-old sailing community.
  • Share what you know (or learn something new!) – your time and energy make a lasting impact on the club and the people who sail with us. You'll also gain hands-on experience, build confidence, and discover skills you didn’t even know you had.
  • Make genuine connections – meet friendly, like-minded people who love the water as much as you do.
  • Queensland's Working with Children Check (Blue Card) - If you don't already have one, you can apply free of charge through the club. This is a requirement for volunteers to hold.

Thank You to Our Current Volunteers 🙏

A huge thank you to our current volunteers who show up rain, shine, or 25 knots. Whether you’re skippering, crewing, cooking the BBQ, or helping behind the scenes - your efforts make our sailing community stronger and more welcoming.

Your energy and generosity are what keep this 116-year-old club going. We appreciate you.
